Breaking: Former Woodstock nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer is pleading guilty to all charges
WOODSTOCK - Former Woodstock Nurse Elizabeth Wettlaufer is pleading guilty to fourteen charges.
A tense mood descended over the courthouse as the fourteen charges were read aloud: eight counts of first degree murder, four counts of attempted murder, and two counts of aggravated assault. As the charges were read Wettlaufer responded 'guilty' in a quiet voice while tearful family members of her victims looked on.
Seven of the deaths, two attempted murders, and the aggravated assaults occurred at the local Caressant Care with the eighth incident happening at a London nursing home.
The other attempted murder charges stem from Telfer Place in Paris and a private residence in Oxford County.
Wettlaufer confirmed insulin injections were used in the murders, admitted intent, and was sober at the time.
She has also waived her right to a trail.
The day is far from over for many; the court will review a 55 page agreed statement of fact and a two hour confessional video today.
More on this story as it develops. Motive is still unclear at this time.
Update 11:36
Wettlaufer says she experienced an urge to kill while on the job. She was angry at her victims, her job, her partner, and life in general. She says killing felt like a pressure relief.
She says she experienced a red surging feeling that indicated God was telling her to end a man's life because he was no longer enjoying it.
Update 3:43
Wettlaufer admitted to feeling remorse for her first victims but added she stopped getting those feelings for future ones. She also confessed her murders to about half a dozen people; most of which have gone unreported to police.
Wettlaufer also said she didn't want to give police officers the names of her victims because of what it would do to the family members who thought their loved one died peacefully.
Update 6:12
We learned that Wettlaufer started getting what she described as a red surge in her body that she interpreted as a sign from God to kill her victims.
She would also hear laughter during the killings and immediately after.
Wettlaufer felt like she was doing gods work while she had remorse after her first victim, she stopped getting those feelings with future victims.
We also learned she confessed her murders to about a half dozen people and those confessions went unreported to police.
Family members spent most of the time wiping away tears and at two points during the hearing, two people stormed out of the courtroom have been wiping tears all day and at times the hearing has been very emotional.
She actually got one of her victims there favourite dessert blueberry pie and ice cream before killing her. At one point during the video confession today a person from the gallery, presumably a family member stormed out as the details of the murder coming directly from Wettlaufer was just to hard to take.
Wettlaufer will be back in court for sentencing and victim impact statements for two days on June 26th and 27th.
