Woodstock City Councillors are no longer allowed to promote any businesses after their code of conduct was updated recently.
WOODSTOCK - Woodstock City Council has updated their Code of Conduct for their councillors. The conduct code was amended at a recent meeting to include the following statement; "Any councillor communication of city business, councillor communication at city events, or councillor communication when representing council shall be free of professional endorsement or personal business promotion".
Councillor Shawn Shapton was the one who brought the amendment to council. He stresses the importance of remaining professional in the eyes of the public.
"It's impairative that we maintain such a professional and high level for our community in the reason we were elected to do and the job we were elected to do".
Shapton tells Heart FM this will help members of council keep their personal lives and their work lives separate, both online and in public.
"I think as we move forward with social media and different ways of communicating, it's easy to blur those lines and I think this will really close that gap".
Shapton adds we are not the only municipality to have this in their councillors code of conduct.
"This is by no means anything new, there are several other municipalities who have this in place. This is just something that I felt was a gap in our own code of conduct and will simply advance what we have".
