WOODSTOCK - Although the University of Ottawa will not be coming to Woodstock, there may be a silver lining.
Woodstock Mayor Trevor Birtch attended the announcement yesterday that saw the proposal for a Markham York University and Seneca College campus. He said even though he knew beforehand that Woodstock had not been successful in obtaining funding for a University of Ottawa campus, it was important to go out and show his appreciation to the minister. Mayor Birtch says the minister had some good news: "2016 they're looking for calls that are closer to the GTA area, and the minister, he assured me that 2017 would be another option for us. And one of the great silver linings for this is the number of cabinet ministers and dignitaries that now know where Woodstock and Oxford County are."
Mayor Birtch says we have already caught the attention of some other universities as well. "We can host academics from any university on a practical side we have so many great opportunities here for them to expand their research and development. For example, next week there will be one professor from York University along with 4 international PHD students from around the world who will be coming to Oxford County to see some of our sites."
The plan moving forward is to keep up the strong relationships built between the city, the county and the university. According to Mayor Birtch, having a university campus here in the city will provide many benefits, including attracting and retaining more of youth. And for that reason, he's not ready to give up quite yet.
