WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service has brought forward an operating budget for 2016 to city council.
The presented budget is for $12 900 092, a 4.99% increase from last year. According to Councillor Shawn Shapton, the chair of the Police Service Board, a budget committee was created in order to help them gain a new perspective as to how much money they need.
"We really came in this year with new eyes and a fresh way to look at the budget. The world of policing is changing and so our board needs to adapt to that as well."
But with a rise in the police budget, there may also be a rise in property taxes. The average home will pay $46.82 a month if this new budget is approved - that's a difference of around $1.27 monthly.
But in the end, Shapton says this budget will really benefit the community.
"It really starts to prepare us for the future. We'll create a sustainability for our reserves and also we'll propel the service board with some new equipment. As we move forward we just need to continue to grow."
