Woodstock Police say PSD Taz passed away on Monday after ingesting drugs while assisting in a Stratford Police investigation.
WOODSTOCK - The Woodstock Police Service is mourning the loss of one of their own.
Police Service Dog Taz died in the line of duty earlier this week.
The four-year-old sable German Shepherd assisted in a Stratford Police drug investigation on Monday, alongside Woodstock Police Service Dog Striker. While on the scene, police say both dogs appeared to have ingested drugs, so they received Narcan before being rushed to a veterinarian clinic. Taz passed away afterward, while Striker stayed at the clinic for observation and returned home today.
Taz began his training with the Woodstock Police Service back in 2021 and was officially deployed last year. He spent a short time with the WPS, but officers say he was an outstanding detection dog assisting in a number of investigations involving drugs, weapons, missing persons, and other arrests. He also attended several community service engagements.
The WPS says he will be missed by his family, his fellow officers, his vets, his groomers, and the therapists who worked with him.
Truly devastating news. A Police K9 and Handler have a very tight bond and are considered family. PSD Taz was well respected in the K9 community. He was a great service dog and we thank him for his service to @Woodstock_PS https://t.co/HgmBzrRCPY
